CESMII and NIST MEP Partner to Boost U.S. Manufacturing with Smart Technologies

The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII), part of the Manufacturing USA network, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Manufacturing Extension Partnership (NIST MEP) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturers. This new collaboration will focus on helping small and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs) adopt smart manufacturing technologies, improving productivity, efficiency, and overall economic performance.

Under the agreement, CESMII, with its expertise in smart manufacturing, will work closely with NIST MEP, which has a national network of experts who support SMMs. The two organizations will combine their resources and knowledge to provide manufacturers with better access to advanced technologies, educational tools, and consulting services designed to enhance innovation and competitiveness. Key points about the collaboration include:

Expand smart manufacturing adoption: By combining CESMII’s specialized knowledge and NIST MEP’s extensive national network and expertise working with SMMs, the partnership aims to facilitate technology transfer, helping manufacturers adopt cutting-edge smart technologies to boost productivity and streamline operations.

Education and training: NIST MEP will work with CESMII to offer training materials, workshops, and hands-on learning opportunities. This includes access to CESMII’s Smart Manufacturing Learning System™ (SMLS), which will help manufacturers develop essential skills in digital manufacturing techniques.

Technology integration: The partnership will also introduce new technologies and best practices to the MEP National Network, helping SMMs unlock the potential of data-driven manufacturing. CESMII will provide tools like its Smart Manufacturing Interoperability Platform™ (SMIP) and starter kits to facilitate this transition.

Support for funding and resources: Both organizations will seek out grants and funding opportunities to help SMMs invest in smart manufacturing technologies and grow their operations.

The collaboration is expected to support manufacturers in enhancing their global competitiveness, accelerating digital transformation, and fostering innovation within the U.S. manufacturing sector.
