Next-generation video screen can be stretched from 12 to 18 inches

Korean electronics company, LG Display Co., Ltd. has announced on its product development page that it has developed a video screen that can be stretched from its default length of 12 inches to 18 inches.

LG Display was chosen by the South Korean government two years ago to lead the charge in developing next-generation video screen technology. Since that time, they have used funds provided by the government to develop stretchable, bendable video screens. They have also partnered with several other academic partners, all working together to push the boundaries of bendable video screens.

In its announcement, the company explains that it has updated the wiring on the display since it first gave consumers a peek at its latest stretchable, bendy video screen back in 2022. They also changed the substrate, switching to a material that they describe as similar to that used to make contact lenses. The changes have allowed the new screen to stretch up to 50% and to be bent, twisted and folded.

The screen is based on micro-LEDs (with light sources of up to 40 micrometers) that the company claims can display full RGB colors at 100ppi. They also claim the screen is more resilient than previous models. Testing, they report, has shown the screen capable of being stretched more than 10,000 times without losing its basic shape or losing image quality. They note it is also capable of working in both high and low temperature environments.

The company notes that the screen is also very lightweight and has been made in a way that allows for sticking to another surface, if desired, serving as an electronic cover.

Not seen in the announcement is how or when the screen will be commercialized. Though there is mention that the company expects the screen to be used in a wide variety of new applications, ranging from interweaving with clothing to implementation with devices that can conform to dashboard shapes in cars, allowing for a more natural look. Also not mentioned is that the image quality of the screen is not as sharp as consumers are used to when looking at their smart phones.
